Bragging rights up for grabs in first Carlsberg Ocean View Cup
Opposing playing captains Nick Jones and Darriek “Nails” Douglas will lead their respective teams into battle in the hope of becoming the first man to lift the Carlsberg Ocean View Cup.
Jones has been appointed captain of the West team and Douglas, the former Wolves and PHC footballer, will lead the East. The teams will square off in an inaugural three-day Ryder Cup-style format tournament, featuring four-ball, foursomes and singles match play at Ocean View Golf Course.
The tournament gets under way on Friday with four-ball (best ball). Play then continues on Saturday with foursomes (alternate shots), followed by head-to-head match play on Sunday.
OJ Pitcher, the Ocean View Golf Course head professional, is looking forward to what promises to be an exciting event.
“Everyone is looking forward to it and we are looking at three days of competitive golf. It’s going to be a professionally run tournament and you’re talking about some of the best golfers on island competing,” he told The Royal Gazette
“We’re definitely looking forward to it and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback. When we first came up with the idea, everybody loved it.
“The membership and people around the club at Ocean View are looking forward to it and we encourage the fans to come on out and cheer the guys on. I know the players are definitely looking forward to it and everyone seems to be excited.”
Each team was originally supposed to consist of the top 12 players from the western and eastern parishes that competed in last year’s Johnnie Walker Classic at Ocean View, which was won by professional Quinton Sherlock Jr.
However, the organising committee was forced to tweak plans because of player unavailability.
“We’ve had to make some adjustments to the list,” Pitcher said.
“So if someone is unable to make it, we will just work our way down the list from those final results of the Johnny Walker and filter people in accordingly based off the parish that they reside in.”
Pitcher is grateful for the support of sponsors Burrows Lightbourn and volunteers to make the event possible.
“I would like to thank Ezekiel Stoneham and Graham Gibbons of Burrows Lightbourn for coming on board as sponsors for the event. Carlsberg is a product that they are associated with, so we want to thank them again for being a part of this event and helping us to make it happen,” he said.
“I would also like to thank the volunteers; those behind the scenes who dedicate their time to come on out and assist with the event.
“We are a very tight community at Ocean View and it’s something you don’t really see in a lot of places. We are passionate about our events and passionate about Ocean View. It’s a place where that feeling of family and that atmosphere that we create at Ocean View is second to none.
“Again, we encourage everyone to come on out and enjoy some competitive, fun and exciting golf. If you’re up there supporting the event and want to have a drink or get some lunch, the restaurant and bar will be open.”
Action gets under way at 7.30am each day.
Meanwhile, Bermuda’s Oliver Betschart endured a tough time at last week’s North & South Men’s Amateur Championship, consisting of stroke play and match play, at the world-famous Pinehurst Golf Course in North Carolina.
Betschart carded an opening-round 71, followed by 82 in the second to miss the 36-hole cut by 12 shots.
The leading local amateur was making his second straight appearance at Pinehurst, where he finished tied for 45th in the 90-strong boys division of the junior amateur championship the previous week.
Joshua Bai, of New Zealand, won the men’s title with a 1 up victory over Keaton Vo in a closely fought matchplay final.
