Bermuda Health Foundation honours Alf Oughton

The Bermuda Health Foundation honoured Alf Oughton at the 9th Annual Salute to Service Award luncheon .

Former Senate President Alfred Oughton, who produced perhaps “the most authentic” healthcare report in the Island’s history, has been honoured with a Salute to Service Award. The Bermuda Health Foundation (BHF) held an awards luncheon yesterday and praised Mr Oughton for his “stellar work in the community” and for producing an “exemplary Health Care Review Report” in May 1996. BHF chairman Philip Butterfield said the Oughton Report was considered by some “to be the most authentic review of Bermuda’s healthcare system to date”.Former Premier Ewart Brown lauded the study for being “home-grown”.“It came from our doctors, our professionals and I think every other report that was done subsequently paled in comparison to the Oughton review,” he said.Dr Brown said some of the 175 recommendations proposed were “still on the table” and said he felt confident authority figures would “see the wisdom” in the recommendations. Mr Oughton, who is recognised for his “legendary fairness, candour and humour”, served in the Senate for 15 years. He was elected Senate President in 1998 and held the post until his retirement a decade later.Vince Ingham, CEO of Belco’s parent company Ascendant Group Limited, said a $25,000 scholarship was established in Mr Oughton’s name for postgraduate students in the social sciences and business.Past Salute to Service Award recipients including community activist Reginald Burrows and pastor Vernon Lambe were present at yesterday’s luncheon.
