Cans of Del Monte corn have been recalled because of an problem in the sterilisation process that could lead to life-threatening illness.

The Ministry of Health issued a warning yesterday and advised anyone who had bought affected tins to return them.

It said the recall was due to “under-processing” linked to Del Monte Fiesta Corn Seasoned with Red and Green Peppers.

The ministry explained: “These deviations were part of the commercial sterilisation process and could result in contamination by spoilage, organisms or pathogens, which could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed.”

It added: “It is important to note that there have been no reports of illness associated with these products to date.”

The 15.25oz or 432g cans went to a number of distributors and retail locations in 25 US states as well as 12 international locations, including Bermuda.

Most of the consignment, imported to the island by Butterfield and Vallis, were retrieved, and supermarket checks continued for the rest yesterday.

The ministry said: “Consumers should check to see if they have any of the affected products as a few cans may already have been sold.”

The products subject to recall were printed with the Universal Product Code: 24000 02770.

They also have “Best if Used By” references stamped on the bottom of the can showing dates in 2021 of August 14, 15, 16, September 3, 4, 5, 6, 22 or 23.

A ministry spokeswoman said: “If consumers have any product with the indicated UPC code and ‘Best if Used By’ dates, they should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange.

No other production codes or products were affected by the recall.
