Active Covid-19 cases increase with one person now in hospital

Bermuda’s confirmed active cases of Covid-19 have nearly doubled in the past week, health officials revealed yesterday – with 75 cases, including one person being treated in hospital.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, also listed the easing of a string of changes to the island’s restrictions against the coronavirus.

There were 66 positive test results out of latest 2,916 in the past week – while 28 people are now clear of the virus – bringing the number of active cases to 75.

The figures come one week after Bermuda’s known cases of Covid-19 fell to only 37.

The count, given in the September 28 update, marked the lowest confirmed cases since December 11, 2021.

Ms Wilson said mask mandates were dropped on Monday, keeping them in place only for health service facilities, rest homes and corrections facilities.

From October 25, travel restrictions are to relax when the island drops pre-arrival or pre-departure testing, arrival testing, and Day 4 testing for travellers.

But the requirement for unvaccinated visitors to provide proof of health insurance covering Covid medical expenses stays in place.

As of November 30, all mask mandates and border controls related to Covid-19 will end.

Ms Wilson said people with medical vulnerabilities were still advised to use masks where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

She added: “Although mask mandates have been significantly relaxed, the virus can spread in crowded settings.

“You should consider wearing a mask in crowded places where you cannot maintain an appropriate physical distance of 6ft from others not in your household or whose immunisation status is unknown.”

Of the island’s new cases, 38 have come from overseas, ten are classed as local transmission and 18 are under investigation.
