Must-win situation: Bermuda have to beat Brazil on Friday to qualify for Saturday’s play-offs (Photograph supplied)

Bermuda head into their final round-robin fixture in the Pan American Challenge at the National Sports Centre on Friday needing nothing short of victory.

Courageous displays by the home team against Paraguay, Mexico and Guyana have delivered only a point. They now need to overcome Brazil, who are also winless, to stand a chance of playing against Guyana or Paraguay in the bronze medal play-off match on Saturday.

Victory would see the Bermudians play in the curtain raiser for the final in which Mexico, the winners of last year’s Central American and Caribbean Games, have already booked a spot.

Failure to win would make Bermuda spectators on the final day of the five-team tournament.

Kovin Moodley, the Bermuda coach, whose team enjoyed a two-day break from action, has his work cut out.

“It’s a must-win game for us against Brazil,’’ Moodley told The Royal Gazette. “Obviously, we want to make the play-offs and if we don’t win, we don’t progress.

“The occasion just sets itself up for a great story for Bermuda to be able to get a result on Friday, and progress to the Saturday games.”

Bermuda dedicated their two-day break from action to reviewing footage from their own matches, as well as the three matches played of their opponents.

In their first match, the Brazilians lost 1-0 to Guyana, with that loss followed by a 3-1 defeat to Mexico. On Tuesday, the they drew 0-0 with fellow South Americans Paraguay.

“This works in our favour in terms of preparing for that match against Brazil,’’ the coach said. “The girls got two days of resting leading into the match, which is really great.

“We would have loved a result against Guyana, but this is part of our story. We’re going to try and make sure that we do as much video work to try and unpack the things that we need to sort our among ourselves.

“We’ll look at videos from the Brazil matches, and have a look at some of the patterns and stuff that we can unlock in their team.

“I’ve already watched Brazil play, I think they have the potential to be dangerous, but I think we have the capacity to win that game. We have to win with a strong number of goals in order to progress.”

Georgia Harris scored Bermuda’s only goal so far in the tournament, against Guyana. The forward felt that they were more aggressive going forward against an improved Guyanese side than they have been the whole tournament.

“We were a lot more attacking against Guyana than we have been in our previous games,” she said.

“Against Brazil, we have to stick to our game plan. When we played Paraguay, we didn’t play badly, we just lost some bit on the field, in terms of communication and cohesiveness.

“I think Mexico were a completely different level. We played exceptionally well against them for the level that they are.

“Against Guyana, we just showed what Bermuda can do. Hopefully, on Friday we can do the exact thing, but put away our chances, get that ball on the net, come away with the three points, and play on Saturday.”

Harris, Mallory Towlson, Megan Troake and Yvonna Osborne will lead Bermuda’s quest for goals against Brazil. In midfield, Elizabeth Stewart, Jennifer Chisnall and Chrysda Smith have stood out in midfield.

At the back, captain LaKae Tavares, Jessica Hollis, Alyssa De Silva and Selina Whitter are looking to keep the Brazilians forwards at bay. The four are expected to give good shield to Christina Stephens-Weser or Latonia Fray in goal.

Grace Lightowler, the youngest member of the team at 15-years-old, has also performed well when given a run in defence and in midfield.
