Where we are going wrong

May 23, 2011Dear Sir,My wife and I have been visiting Bermuda since 1968. Since the year 2000 our stays have been longer, (around six weeks) and during January and February. This past January AND February was perhaps the best we have had in the past five years. We noted that the Tourism department was very visible and effective, and were genuinely putting the tourists first. We had the pleasure of meeting the Tourism Minister and her two assistants, and felt that finally Bermuda was on the right track. This was not only our view, but many people we met had the same impression. However, public transport seems to be going out of their way to undo all the good the tourism department has done. First it was the cruise ship fiasco, and next it is the regular ferry service, in particular the pink route. Many tourists and locals use the service from Salt Kettle on a regular basis. For example we use it frequently during the day, and to go to Hamilton for dinner. We can get back home on the late ferry.Taking a taxi (if you can get one) makes the evening too expensive, and I can see us staying at home rather than going through the inconvenience of hoping we will get a taxi home. Why do people go into the taxi business if they are not willing to work evenings? We are certain that restaurants and bars will suffer as a result of these cutbacks to the ferry service. With international business not being what it used to be, it would seem logical to do all you can to make people want to come back to Bermuda, and in particular we seniors, who arrive at off peak periods, and spend considerably more time and money than what others would.JUNE & JOHN KOUSAIEBeaconsfield, Quebec
