Bermuda’s last, best chance

July 29, 2012Dear Sir,An election always seems to muddy the waters of discussion but we are in a disastrous situation now. We need a change in direction if only for the sake of getting tourists and businesses back here and to see Bermuda as a welcoming place. If we don't have a change in Government, we will enter the dead zone. I am certain of that ... there will be no new investment, more (many more) job losses and a continued deterioration of our community. Believe me and many others ... what is happening here is not the fault of the global economy, it’s the fault of the PLP ... end of story. There seem to be people out there who believe that not having a job or being able to rent that empty apartment or watching the value of their family home decline is all worth it so that Bermuda can bask in the sunshine of a perpetual PLP regime. It is difficult to believe that there are so many Bermudians who seem to be oblivious to the fact that we have become a pariah in the world of international business and in the tourist industry. We are not welcoming, we are expensive and we are still living in a make believe world that says that we Bermudians should come first simply because they are Bermudian. In some ways, and I do subscribe to the Kevin Comeau theory of “what’s wrong here”, it’s not going to matter. If we get the same old tired PLP regime, it will be like the bad experience in a restaurant ... those of us who can, will simply take our livelihood somewhere else. If the OBA can’t win the next election, then we are destined to be burdened with a PLP government for many years to come. This must be the best scenario for a leadership change since George Somers arrived here and if it can’t happen now ... sayonara.I am a born and bred white Bermudian, educated here, raised a family here and worked almost all my life here. I treat people with decency and I understand the differences between us. The PLP are fond of saying that they put Bermuda first ... if they truly believe that, then stand aside and let someone else have a chance. What are they scared of ... that the OBA will do a great job?TIME TO SAY GOODBYECity of Hamilton
