Did they find new jobs?

The Castle Harbour hotel, one of many establishments no longer here but recalled by a letter writer.

August 11, 2012Dear Sir,While going through my archives last week, I found a pre-1985 Bermuda hotel guide. As I thumbed through it, I was amazed at how many hotels are gone: Castle Harbour, Belmont, Ariel Sands, Glencoe, Bermudiana, Lantana, Loughlands, Inverurie, Sonesta, Mermaid, Coral Island, Newstead, Waterloo House, Club Med, and many smaller ones.My question is: Where did all the Bermudian workers find jobs? I don’t know the number of positions, but it must be staggering. I’m sure that they were not all low paying jobs. Most hotels had gift shops, beauty salons, spas, restaurants, etcOne of the favourite aspects of my many Bermuda vacations was seeing the hotel workers who helped make my vacations warm and friendly. For years I was welcomed back to The Reefs by Silvia Bean, Wendell, Roger and Preacher — the last two I made into characters in my novel “Pink Rock”.I certainly hope they found good employment since then. I can’t imagine that any of my “friends” are/were employed in IB. I sometimes talk with older Bermudians who, in the “Old Days,” worked in the hospitality industry and loved their jobs. I guess that they just accepted what they had and didn’t protest much (Maybe they should have.)But Bermudian hospitality was, and still is when I visit, one of the major reasons that I have been back 43 times.RON LACEYMassapequa, New York
