Father and son deal with heavy traffic for Wedco National Championship success

Bermuda Power Boat Association rear commodore Craig Nesbitt Sr was left with mixed emotions after making a promising start to the powerboat season in the Wedco National Championships.

Nesbitt and his son, Craig Jr, shared D Class honours when their sole rivals, Steven Meireles and Ryan Resendes, failed to make it to the finish in the second of two timed offshore races after they took the chequered flag in the first.

However, Nesbitt was again left frustrated with facing heavy marine traffic that could have put their safety at risk for the second straight race day.

“It was crazy marine traffic out there and somebody has to deal with it,” Nesbitt said.

“I was very disgruntled with the marine traffic, which was way worse than the last time.

“It was the first race of the season for us as we missed the first race day waiting for parts to come in. We were testing certain things on the boat and it turned out to be a good day.”

As was the case at last month’s season opener at Ferry Reach, there was a low turnout of entries in the event at Dockyard on Sunday, with only one boat making it to the start in all but two classes.

Reigning Rubis Around the Island champions Henry Talbot and Andrew Cottingham were uncontested in the S class after rivals J’auza James and Daric Seymour failed to make the start.

Quince’ Dowling and BPBA vice commodore Tai Bean were the only team competing in the C class, Howard Ascento and Joshua Wilson took the B class with Shane Medeiros and Joshua Holders racing the only boat in A class.

Brandon DeSilva and Blake Burgess also ran unchallenged after BV class rivals Cleveland Maybury and Ernie Mello were unable to make it to the start line for the two scheduled 20-minute races held off Cross Island.

The BV class is reserved for boats with v-hulls only and is one of three new classes introduced by the BPBA this year, including the AV class and recreational class for personal watercraft or jet skis.

Santiago Roe was the top driver on the day in the junior class

The Wedco National Championship is a three-race series held in conjunction with the BPBA and West End Development Corporation. Teams are awarded points for their results that will count towards determining the overall series winners.
