Nuff Said beats Team Bermuda in 1-2 for island in Missouri
Luis Martins and Nick Imprescia picked up their first win together at the Lake of Ozarks Shootout in Missouri on Sunday.
The pair led the 16-strong Super Stock class across the stripe in their 32ft twin-engined catamaran, Nuff Said, to claim the coveted chequered flag.
“It’s amazing. I‘m happy obviously and surprised our first win came this fast,” driver Martins told The Royal Gazette.
It was a proud day indeed for the island as IHRA Offshore Series Championship Super Stock points leaders Team Bermuda finished runners-up after finishing 12 seconds behind Nuff Said in the eight-lap race.
“That was amazing for us, little Bermuda,” Martins said.
Team Bermuda, comprised of boat owner and throttle man Steven Bridges and driver David Selley, started from pole position after posting the fastest qualifying time (6min 45sec) and led coming off the start.
Martins and Imprescia also got off to a good start and grasped the lead for good after passing Bridges and Selley heading down the first straightaway.
“Steven held the inside line around the first, second and third pin and then as we were going down the straightaway towards the start/finish line we started pulling away a little bit and we separated right there,” Martins said.
“I was looking out for Steven and David the whole race, but we were able to keep the lead, so I’ll take it.”
Martins and Imprescia’s gamble to change motors for the race paid off.
“We changed the motors for this race, trying different things,” Martins said. “We are always looking for something else and it just worked out in our favour, so we’ll take it
Martins and Imprescia have finished no lower than sixth in the four races to date and were fourth in the IHRA Offshore Series Championship Super Stock class heading into the event.
Despite coming up short of victory, Bridges was happy to see his team claim another podium finish and extend their lead in the IHRA Offshore Series Championship Super Stock class.
“Not the result we wanted, but to have second and get out of here with some really good points is the main thing really,” he said.
“Wozencraft, who was in second place 27 points behind us, had a really bad finish today so that separated us and helped us in the points.
“Today definitely helped us separate a little bit from first to second, which is the main goal at the end of the year.
“You obviously want to win races, but you want to win the championship so overall a really good day for us and I cannot complain.”
Bridges and Selley have stood on the podium at every race so far this season, having won the St Petersburg Grand Prix and Thunder at Cocoa Beach and also finished second at the New Orleans Grand Prix.
“It’s been a great start for us and the momentum is good,” Bridges said.
“The team is doing well and David and I are gelling well in the boat. We just have to keep consistent and keep pushing.”
Bridges hailed Martins and Imprescia’s maiden victory at this level.
“They got a first win way quicker than we did, which is great and is not easy to do with all these teams up here,” he said.
“‘Everybody is so competitive and tight, so for these guys to get their first win already is a big accomplishment. This makes three wins out of four races for Bermuda which is pretty cool ”
Bridges is proud to see two Bermuda teams finish first and second at the same event.
“Both boats on the podium is awesome and the icing on the cake,” he said.
“It would’ve been awesome even if we were second and third on the podium. But we were first and second, which is even better.”
American team Allied STR crossed in third, more than a minute behind the winners.
