Cottingham and Talbot defend title in season debut
The wait is nearly over for Andrew Cottingham and Henry Talbot who are making their delayed season debut in the prestigious Hamilton Harbour Race on Sunday.
The pair have not competed since flipping their 24ft Twister in St George’s Harbour last September but are excited to finally rejoin their fellow colleagues and compete for honours on the racecourse.
“Unfortunately we’ve been missing out on the start of the season as we’ve been extremely busy with work,” throttle man Cottingham told The Royal Gazette.
“We are excited to get back in and it’s been awhile. The last race we crashed, so this will be our debut race from that. It’s nice to get back behind the wheel, get on the track and get some adrenalin going.”
Cottingham and driver Talbot, who represent Devil’s Isle Racing, are the reigning D-class champions and will defend their title in the team’s Talon catamaran in the popular race.
“This is the boat we raced previously to the one we crashed,” Cottingham said.
“We ran the Talon catamaran last season and then we got the Twister end of the season that we ran Around the Island Race with and then the race we did in St George’s Harbour where we crashed.”
Cottingham is pumped up for the big occasion.
“It’s always a great race and exciting with all the crowds there,” he said.
“It usually gets a good turnout of boats so it’s good competition. It’s a tight track so it’s not all down to the fastest boat but how you turn.”
Bermuda Power Boat Association public relations officer Elizabeth Waldron is looking forward to a full and exciting day of racing.
“We have a full line-up on Sunday, starting with the junior races at 10am and the main races kicking off with a parade lap at 2pm and race start at 2:30pm,” she said.
“There will be two 20-minute heats with the second heat at 3:30pm. All classes A, B, C, and D are in the mix, with B being the largest class. We look for a great day and some exciting races.”
