Police tonight said that an image of what appeared to be armed police outside City Hall in Hamilton was fake.

A spokesman added it was “not a police exercise and there was no involvement by the BPS or any of its officers”.

He said it appeared the image, which has circulated on social media, appeared to have been captured during filming for a on-island production - and that the makers risked falling foul of the law.

The spokesman said: “The public should be aware that impersonating a police officer and possession of replica firearms without the proper authority or permission are offences punishable under law.”

He added officers were “urgently seeking to make contact with the individuals identified as being responsible for the staging of this event, as to undertake such activity without proper permissions and controls can cause unnecessary and very real alarm and distress to the public, not least with the enactment involving the use of imitation firearms.”

Anyone with information that could help the police inquiry should contact 211 or the main police number on 295-0011.
