A passion for paint

Photo by Glenn Tucker X - Clue -Sive Creatons store owner Doris Wade shows you what a ceramic puse can look like before and after.

fter four years working as a ceramics artist from her home studio, Doris Wade has brought her passion to the masses with a paint-your-own pottery studio just opened on Reid Street.

Called X-Clue-Sive Creations, Ms Wade offers shelves of almost any ceramic you could hope to paint, from bathroom accessories, dishes, planters to lamps.

It is also kid-friendly with a full line for the budding child artist being able to pick from piggy banks, ceramic teddy bears to collectible pottery items.

Ms Wade, who opened the doors of her new shop ? where she also sells her own handpainted wares ? in the last fortnight, has set up next to Chopsticks Restaurant in the site of what was formerly Robert Bassett's Regal Gallery.

There are 80 special glazes and numerous stamps to decorate with and an idea bin to inspire those who do not know where to begin.

X-Clue-Sive Creations also hosts children's parties as well as special evenings for seniors and a ladies' night, from the venue.

Ms Wade got the idea for the shop after a trip to Baltimore ? but she has been painting ceramics and selling them at Harbour Nights for several years now.

But the move into retail premises, and giving others a creative outlet, comes after a career working as a chef at the Fairmont Southampton Princess.

She told that she juggled both creative avenues ? ceramics and cuisine ? in tandem, only having the chance to share her endeavours with the public from a stall at the popular Wednesday night Hamilton street festival.

Now she seems only too happy to have turned to ceramics full-time, and said she eventually will include a coffee bar on the premises.Would-be pot painters have a wide range of hours to work in as X-Clue-Sive Creations is opened Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sunday hours will be introduced from September, Ms Wade said.

Prices depend on the piece one chooses to paint, with an additional surcharge covering the paints and firing process. Clients can collect their wares within a week, after they are fired in the studio's own kilns set up in a back room.
