AT&T head optimistic over deal
The head of AT&T Wireless Bermuda says that the $41 billion cash purchase of his parent company by Cingular Wireless will only mean good things for the local market.
The sale creates the nation?s largest cellular carrier, called Cingular Wireless LLC, with 47.6 million customers. While in the United States it will lead to widespread layoffs, AT&T Wireless Bermuda general manager Jonathan Koshar says that here it will mean only good news for customers and his 30 some staff.
?There was no Cingular here before the transaction so there won?t be a loss of jobs as you consolidate. None of the bad news sorts of things,? he said adding that the good news is the huge company will have improved buying power. ?It will bring down the cost of equipment and we?ll be able to make more roaming agreements at better rates.?
Customers will notice a quick brand transition from AT&T?s blue logo to the Cingular orange, however it will take a little longer for the company to bring in Cingular?s cellphones.
On the data side, Mr. Koshar says that his company will continue to offer its mMode which it just launched last month.
?We have mMode, they have a similar product. The name may change with that but absolutely we have launched that and we will continue to offer mMode.
?The only thing that will happen is the larger company will have more resources to offer more websites,? he said.
?It is a big commitment to future technology like UMTS which is faster data speeds.
?Fundamentally there is a commitment to the latest and greatest technology and faster data speeds and more data devices and that sort of thing.?
