Metcalf resigns as CEO of XL?s Lloyd?s business

Nicholas J. Metcalf, chief executive officer of XL Capital?s Lloyd?s of London operation, is leaving the company.

Metcalf is leaving to ?pursue other business interests,? XL said in a statement distributed by PR Newswire.

Clive R. Tobin, chief executive of insurance operations for XL, said: ?Nick has achieved considerable success in re-structuring our Lloyd?s operations and aligning them with XL?s global insurance strategy. The business is performing well and Nick?s contribution over the years has been highly valued.?

Mr. Metcalf, who is the active underwriter for Lloyd?s Syndicate 1209, will work closely with XL to ensure a smooth transition to a new management team, which will be announced ?in due course?, the company said.

Mr. Metcalf started his career at Lloyd?s in 1977. He was appointed chief executive officer of XLLM in September 2000. XLLM is one of Lloyd?s leading managing agencies, with syndicate capacity of over $500 million.

James McNichols has been appointed global chief actuary of XL Capital.

Mr. McNichols, the former executive vice president and chief operating officer of XL?s triple-A-rated financial guarantee reinsurance subsidiary, XL Financial Assurance Ltd., replaces Mr. Tom Weidman who has assumed the position of executive vice president & actuary, special projects.

Mr. McNichols will lead and oversee all major actuarial functions including the establishment of unpaid loss and loss expense reserves, pricing benchmarks and related financial provisions. His replacement at XLFA has been selected and will be announced shortly.
