A business leader on course

goals and see themselves, their family, their companies achieving specific objectives. William Alexander (Bill) Black, chief executive officer of Bermuda Security Group Limited, has that ability.

Mr. Black was born in Northern Ireland, attended school there until the age of 14 when he went to work. His parents were farmers and there was always plenty of work to be done.

"I was a rather wild lad when I was about 17 and I decided to join the Royal Ulster Constabulary where I was stationed on the border between Northern and Southern Ireland,'' he said.

When he was age 19 he joined the West Yorkshire Police Service and stayed there for three years when he applied to join the overseas police service for a posting to Kenya. He had an interview for the Kenya Police but because he had no fingerprint experience he was asked if he would like to go to Bermuda for three years.

"At the time, I knew nothing about Bermuda except I had read in the News of the World about the `murder mile in a millionaire's paradise' and had a vague idea where it was,'' he reflected.

In 1962 Mr. Black arrived in Bermuda as a uniformed constable. He spent six months on the beat and then went into cycle squad and later to the Criminal Investigation Department. He achieved the rank of detective sergeant. In 1968 he was called back from vacation to Bermuda as the results of riots and destruction of property by fire.

He left the police force with more than 20 commendations and started a small company, "Island Wide Security'', in 1969 with the sum of 500 pounds and made it into a multi-million dollar firm with branches in the Cayman Islands.

Mr. Black possesses an aura of trust which is comforting in today's chaotic world. His police career provided an avalanche of police experience. He has consulted with criminal experts lending his skills to several foreign countries.

He is a member of American Society for Industrial Security and Area Governor (Bermuda) and has belonged to the World Association of Detectives for 25 years.

In 1992 Mr. Black journeyed to Russia as a security consultant. The trip was led by Gerard Burke who was a foreign intelligence advisor to President Nixon who is well known to his former opposite numbers in Russia.

He has belonged to the World Investigators Network for the past three years.

The police force motivated Mr. Black to be the best he could be. "The police force moulds leaders. They helped me set goals and I made a wonderful job of it. I seized the opportunities they gave me. I would choose the same path all over again. I advise young people to look for job satisfaction before money.'' One of Mr. Black's corporate strengths is his vision for international expansion. He sees the firm expanding into other island countries such as the British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, Barbados and Grenada.

Mr. Black has been married for 25 years to Susan and they have five children, two living in Bermuda, one in Canada and twin girls at university in the US.
