BIT's start-up costs are estimated at $550,000 in excess of the minimum share call of $12,000. Costs will be financed by equity contributions. Services that BIT intend to offer include direct dial services, international 56-64 switched services, video services, video conferencing, radio paging services, and data circuits. BIT claims to have negotiated and secured contracts with telecommunications companies ATN, MCI, and Sprint, that would result in savings of 30-60 percent on Bermuda's existing long distance service, by using a fibre-optic cable system. BIT argue that the savings will "begin to answer recent calls by local business for the reduction of profit-gobbling overheads''.

Sir Michael has also been a controversial chairman of car maker British Leyland, now called Rover, and Minorco, the investment wing of the South African mining giant Anglo-American, which was based in Bermuda until the mid-1980's.

Mr. John Casling.
