Hundreds of families filled Hamilton's shopping streets on Friday night as a Lighting of the City ceremony kicked off the Chamber of Commerce's Yuletide events.

Recession-hit shop and restaurant owners are hoping such events will get residents in the festive spirit and persuade them to spend locally, rather than keep their cash in the bank or take it overseas.

Friday evening's events involved choir singing, majorettes and a special lighting-up ceremony outside the library in Queen Street. After the arrival of Santa, a parade marched to City Hall.

"We were very pleased,'' said Chamber president Mr. Louis Mowbray. "We had a good turnout and the public seemed to be very interested.

"It was quite a good start - I think a lot of people were checking things out for Christmas and there will be more spending in the following weeks.'' Executive director Ms Carolyn Mello added: "It was very successful and we brought in a lot of people. I've been speaking to a couple of retailers and they feel there were lot more people about than in past years.

"We were very pleased with the night, and I think the shops collectively did their bit.'' Many major stores were open until 9 p.m. and put on special festive events, including appearances by World Cup soccer stars and live music at Trimingham's.

Ms Mello said it was too early to say if the crowds had resulted in a boost in takings. Results would be gathered this week, she said.

More than 70 merchants, pub owners and restaurateurs are joining in the Chamber's Christmas Shopping Festival, billed as a first-time event.

The campaign is being planned to cover all the Island's main shopping areas, with special events including Santa parades in Dockyard, Somerset, St.

George's and Hamilton.

Every Friday night, organisers have planned street music, dancing, Gombeys, school choristers and fashion parades.

Every shopper who spends more than $25 at a participating business can qualify for a weekly draw.

Organisers anticipate more than 100 winners, with top prizes including a four-night stay at Elbow Beach and a locally-made dinghy.

An open invitation has been made to musicians and entertainers to take part.

LIGHTING UP -- Children's faces and Christmas decorations were lit up in Hamilton on Friday night when Santa came to town. Here, the annual visitor is seen with fans in the Phoenix Centre.
