Island attracts high-flyer
training programme.
US Airways used the Island as a training destination for its newest aircraft, as a method of giving pilots "over water'' experience without having to fly thousands of miles.
The new Airbus A330 touched down on Monday in the last of several visits to Bermuda during the last few days.
The aircraft is the latest addition to the airline's fleet and will be used for its trans-Atlantic routes; from Philadelphia to Paris, Frankfurt and, eventually, the UK.
Local US Airways' manager Herbie Siggins said: "Bermuda provides a very useful opportunity to fly the aircraft in oceanic conditions without having a long flight. It can get back to Philadelphia fairly quickly.'' Yesterday, Captain Tracy Barnett, who is in charge of pilot training for US Airways, and first officer Rick Ross, a pilot training officer, brought the Airbus in for a few hours.
Mr. Siggins said the visit was mainly for pilot and maintenance training, but also included time for airport support staff to check the aircraft out.
It is billed as the airline's rival to British Airway's long range Boeing 777 aircraft and is currently part of a three-strong fleet, with a further plane expected soon.
