New marina owners aim to live up to no-hassle name
Passionate about his marine mechanics profession, Chris Hassell has worked for several years from his truck. The situation was not ideal but through his determination and dedication, he kept his business going for several years.
Partnering with his father Douglas Hassell a few months ago, Chris now has a small yard and marina, No Hassells Marina, at Riddells Bay.
The father and son team took over the Riddells Bay marina this summer and have upgraded the services available there to attract new business.
There is a full-service Esso station with gas and diesel fuel for boats and land vehicles. A small variety shop at the site stocks everything from cold bottles of wine to bait and tackle to fuel treatments, oils and spray lubricants.
Chris Hassell said that he and his father have had to work hard at gaining the trust of their customers as the station was handed over with a tarnished reputation.
"The man who ran this before us, used to close up the shop at any time,'' Chris said. "We've had to reassure customers that we are reliable and that we will be open during the hours we have posted.'' And the new management operate the marina seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m..
Chris became a certified motor mechanic at 18 and now at 23 he not only has years of experience under his belt, but confidence and people skills as well.
He runs the marina side of the business while his father operates the gas station and convenience store.
"I rebuild motors both gas and diesel. I do basic electric work. I clean boats, wax and paint the bottoms and also offer a long term maintenance service,'' he said.
"People who need trailer services or have to have their boats towed in can also come to me for the service,'' he added.
Attentive to his customers in a quiet friendly manner, Chris Hassell says his business has increased since moving to Riddells Bay.
"I have been getting quite a bit of business just from the owners of boats kept around here,'' he said.
