Nuclear submarine comes up for air, Royal Majesty back
A US nuclear submarine surfaced briefly in Bermuda's waters last weekend. The vessel stopped off at Five Fathom Hole at 9 a.m. on Saturday to drop off a sailor before continuing on its way.
In cruise ship news, Royal Majesty made her return trip this week after a three-week absence. Disaster struck earlier this month when the cruise ship ran aground outside Boston Harbour on a return trip to Bermuda. However, things were back to normal this week when Royal Majesty arrived on schedule with 1,247 passengers at Ordinance Island, St. George's on Tuesday morning.
She sails tomorrow for Boston.
Passenger numbers were the best this season on two ships that arrived in Bermuda this week.
Both Horizon and Dreamward topped their records for the year with 1,601 and 1,380 passengers respectively.
Horizon berthed at Number 1 Dock in Hamilton at 8.30 a.m. on Monday before shifting to St. George's on Wednesday morning. She sails for New York this afternoon, a Meyer Agencies spokesman reported.
Also on Monday morning, Dreamward arrived in St. George's. She berthed at Penno's Wharf before moving to Number 5/6Docks in Hamilton on Tuesday morning.
She is also due to depart for New York later today.
Also in cruise ship news, Meridian made her first call out of New York this week bringing with her 1,310 passengers. She docked at King's Wharf, Dockyard at 10.20 a.m. on Tuesday morning and returns to New York at 5 p.m. tomorrow.
John S. Darrell reported that Song of America arrived in St. George's also on Tuesday with 1,453 passengers on board. She moved to Number 1 Dock in Hamilton on Wednesday morning and sails tomorrow afternoon.
Two container ships arrived this week. Oleander arrived in Hamilton on schedule on Sunday with 138 dry containers and 38 reefers, reported a spokesman from Container Ship Management. Also on board were four cars, a crane and two mafis holding structural steel and building materials. She sailed for Salem, New Jersey on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, Bermuda Islander berthed at Number 7 Dock in Hamilton a day early with one horse and 78 containers on board of which nine were reefers. Meyer Agencies reported that the ship arrived on Monday afternoon and departed for Salem the following morning.
In other shipping news, Aghia Marina a Maltese registered, 146-metre bulk carrier arrived at Dockyard from Odessa in the Black Sea on Tuesday afternoon.
She sailed yesterday morning for Jacksonville, Florida after replenishing fuel stocks.
Anemonia a 22,633 tonne tanker from the Netherland Antilles berthed at the Oil Docks on North Shore yesterday morning, a Harbour Radio spokesman reported yesterday.
The ship which measures 575 feet long is en route to Curacao in Venezuela, South America. She is expected to depart this morning.
