Power out all day on part of Front Street

A story in yesterday's paper incorrectly stated that an area of Front Street lost electrical power for most of the day on Wednesday. The power outage occurred on Tuesday.

A power outage affecting a section of Front Street was finally fixed last night after hours of trying to gain access to the relevant systems.

The electricity loss lasted from early in the morning to about 9 p.m.

yesterday evening, denying power to a refrigeration system filled with perishable goods.

Also affected by the outage were the offices of the Opposition Leader, the HM Customs buildings and the offices Stevedoring Services.

Spokesperson for BELCO Ltd. Robin McPhee explained that electricity was restored to these offices by around 11 a.m.

She added: "The refrigeration system is usually not turned on during the day anyway so the outage didn't really affect the goods.'' The reason it took so long to restore power was because access to the relevant systems was blocked by a large container.

"After the people on the docks moved it,'' Ms McPhee said, "the technicians were able to get in and replace a couple of faulty transformers.'' Asked if this was a regular occurrence, she said that with greater demand on the system in the summer, this sort of thing is prone to happen.

Ms McPhee added: "It is unfortunate that this system had a fault but service for customers will be vastly improved when the brand new transformers are completely installed.''
