A taste of Bermuda in New England

For restaurateurs Robert and Peter Derba are selling traditional Bermuda fare in a theme restaurant in the unlikely setting of Lynnfield, Massachusetts.

Towne Lyne House was founded as a restaurant by Noble Jackson in 1938 but the eating-house's roots stretch back to the days when Lynnfield was a stage coach stop between Portland and Boston.

The Derba brothers bought the restaurant -- which looks out on Lake Suntaug -- ten years ago and added on the Bermuda Pub and Grille a year later.

And since the pub first opened its doors, the menu has offered such local favourites as The Lobster Pot's Fish Chowder, Elbow Beach Hotel's Onion Soup and Romanoff's Caesar Salad, all made using the original recipes.

Patrons can also dine on dishes, with catchy Bermudian names like Grotto Bay Nachos, Mid-Ocean Lobster Salad, St. David's Chicken Salad or Tucker's Town Haddock and Cheese.

The pub also serves up traditional Rum Swizzles, Bermuda Triangles, Bermuda Sunrises and Dark and Stormies made with Goslings Black Rum.

And the food is not the only thing that has a distinct Bermudian flavour -- the walls are decorated with prints of the Island, including many original paintings by Bermuda's famed artist Alfred Birdsey.

To ensure an authentic Island eating experience, the brothers worked closely with the Bermuda Department of Tourism's Boston office to launch the restaurant.

And Mr. Derba said the hard work paid off and swore anyone who walked into the pub would be convinced they were in Bermuda.

"Everything in there is authentic,'' he said. "The waiters wear Bermuda shorts and socks, Hubert Smith is singing in the background and we have a Bermuda bobbies' helmet in the bar.'' Mr. Derba said he began a love affair with Bermuda when he visited as a college student in 1959 and added he had "never missed a year since''.

He estimated that he has made more than 100 trips to the island over the years.

And he even met his wife Patricia in Bermuda on the Labour Day weekend in 1969.

"Those Bermudians who live in the Boston area and know about us come by on a regular basis,'' he said.

The Bermuda Pub & Grille has also acted as host for the last eight years to the Bermuda Department of Tourism's Boston Office's annual Christmas Party.

This Valentine's Day, Ted Ming and the Bermuda Strollers will return to the establishment to perform at a dinner show.

He said that the Strollers' shows were always a sell-out and recommended that any Bermudians in the Boston area who wanted to attend should make reservations early.

The Valentine's Day tickets will be $35 a piece and includes a choice of three entrees.

The Pub also features a weekly Ladies' and Men's night special where patrons can dine for $1.99.

"We offer four different specials in the Bermuda Pub 7 Grille on Monday night for the ladies and Wednesday night for the men.'' The special deals are available from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mr. Derba added that they recently expanded the Bermuda Pub & Grille, doubling its size. And the establishment also boasts a large pink sign to welcome local and Bermudian patrons to the pub.

The Towne Lyne House, with its Bermuda Pub & Grille, is located on US 1 at the intersection of I 95 and 128. it is just 15 minutes from Logan Airport or 20 minutes from downtown Boston. For more information call (617) 592-6400.
