Bosnia Christmas appeal launched

when Bermuda will once again be asked to fill a container with warm winter clothing, food and medicine.

Mrs. Lucy Willitts, who has headed the Bosnia Appeal for the past three years, says this will be the eighth container to be sent.

"There has been no electricity or running water in most of Bosnia for the past two years,'' she said. "It will be another winter of bitter privation and I'm appealing to the people of Bermuda to be as generous as they have been in the past.'' Mrs. Willitts, who was recently awarded the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour for her many years of community service, added: "The driving force for this appeal is that people keep asking me to do it!'' She emphasised that only one container would be sent this time: "Once that container is filled it will be shipped immediately. From past experience we have found that it takes two to three days to fill the container, so we are asking the community to bring their contributions to Lindo's -- the usual place -- as soon as possible.'' Mrs. Willitts confirms that all the previous containers have been safely, and gratefully, received.

"I would also like to emphasise that all of the items were distributed to those in need, regardless of their culture, religion or nationality. So many people, especially children, are suffering, and have been suffering for a very long time now. There is an urgent need for warm clothing, and medicine and medical supplies.'' Mrs. Willitts says that hotels have already donated sheets and blankets. "I would like to point out that this appeal is not in conflict with the Antigua hurricane appeal -- for one thing, they are not asking for warm clothing, which the people of Bosnia urgently need.'' The container will be situated outside Lindo's Market in Devonshire from 12 noon on Monday, October 16.

Mrs. Willitts is requesting that all items be packed in boxes and clearly marked.
