Record turnout for End to End Walk
most money.
But despite the records the tenth annual End-To-End Charity Walk fell tantalisingly short of reaching another milestone -- the $1 million mark.
Now the organisers are hoping the Island's corporate institutions will go that extra mile and fill the cash shortfall.
On Saturday 1,211 walkers took to Bermuda's street and roads, about 400 more than last year.
Already $170,000 is in the bank and it is expected that the total will reach $220,000 when pledges are honoured, eclipsing last year's $128,000 total.
However it was hoped to raise $256,930 this year to bring the total over ten years to $1 million.
Last night Paul Rowlerson, one of the walk's organisers, said: "It is just short of our $1 million target, but more people took part and we raised more money, so it was still a tremendous success.
"We think we might still get to $1 million because we still have some corporate donations to collect and we are hoping they might be generous and help us reach our target.'' As well as the adult walkers, who took part in the End-To-End and the Middle-To-End walks, there was a youth walk and a short walk in Dockyard for toddlers.
Money raised this year will go to CrimeStoppers, the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association, The Admiralty House Community Centre's Senior Islander Programme and the Friends of Bermuda Library.
Over the past nine years of the walk more than 5,000 people have taken part and raised $743,070 for a total of 32 charities.
