Sandys group may get support
Bermuda's latest youth and community centre, according to a Minister.
David Dyer, the Youth and Sports Minister, said the Sandys Community Action Group should present a detailed plan for the building at Daniel's Head.
"They should develop an in-depth proposal and come to us and I am sure we will look at at favourably,'' said Dr. Dyer.
Last week it emerged that the Bermuda Land Development Company had agreed to hand over Building Number 2 at Daniel's Head to the Action Group.
It will cost $25,000 to renovate although the BLDC has agreed to foot the bill, which it hopes to lower with volunteers giving free help.
However it will also cost money to run and the BLDC suggested the Action Group should approach Government to get financial help.
The BLDC says it hopes the building will meet the needs of the Group, until a "permanent west end community centre is found''.
Keith Tucker, the Action Group's chairman, said he was delighted with the BLDC's offer.
He said the building had been offered to his Group, but would be used by Gerald Fubler's Sandys Youth Community Club.
"We've managed to get this building for the youth group, which we are delighted about,'' said Mr. Tucker.
"The BLDC will pay for the renovations, but they will try and lower the cost by getting volunteers.'' The offer is designed to be temporary and Mr. Tucker added: "I believe the Department of Youth and Sport is also looking for another building that will embrace the whole community,'' he added.
"It is very satisfying for me and my committee that we have achieved this success for the community of Somerset.'' The BLDC's CEO Carl Musson revealed that a building was being handed over in a letter to Mr. Tucker on May 1.
Mr. Musson admitted that problems in finding a building had been frustrating and he hoped this would serve immediate needs until a permanent place was found.
His letter adds: "Operating this building will also cost money. There will be electricity bills, ongoing maintenance charges, insurance costs and equipment needs,'' added Mr. Musson.
"I would strongly encourage the Sandys Community Action Group to contact service clubs and Government about providing financial support for this important cause. Without proper financing the centre cannot operate properly.'' GOVERNMENT GVT DANIELS HEAD MILITARY MIL
