A poet .^.^. and knows it!
her original poems has been accepted for publication in a major poetry anthology to be published shortly in England.
Ginea Edwards, well known to Bermuda audiences for her appearances as a lead actress with the Jabulani Repertory Company and Black Box Productions, says she will receive royalties when the book, entitled "Afterglow'' is published.
"It's not the money that's important but the fact that my poem was chosen,'' she beams. "I've been writing poetry since I was about six and I write a journal every day. The poem chosen was a very short one, called `Tomorrow Came'.
The book is being published by Poetry Now, a division of Forward Press Ltd., dedicated to new poetry which appeals to a wide readership.
Ms Edwards, who has scored personal success in the comedy "Livin' Fat'' and "One Mo' Time'' and "Once on this Island'' during Jabulani's Princess Hotel seasons, is also excited by the fact that she has also just been granted an unconditional offer of a place at England's Middlesex University to study drama this October.
`I've accepted the place -- but I am now waiting for funding to back it up.'' Meanwhile, she is working as supervisor of Government's performing arts summer camp.
A natural comedienne with a fine singing voice, she has appeared in the Old Tyme Music Hall at Daylesfor and has opened for such stars appearing here in concert as Roberta Flack, Shabba Ranks and TV comedian Jahleel White. She has also appeared in local commercials for the Bank of Bermuda, Governemnt's Youth and Sport, KBB and Child Abuse.
At the moment, she is busy putting the final touches to a music demo produced by Owen Critchley. Not surprisingly, all of the songs were written, as well as sung by her.
There is no doubt that, on the artistic front, Ginea Edwards is an all-rounder. After receiving an associate degree in Fine Arts (with distinction) from the Bermuda College, she won an art exhibition prize in New York. She was also the recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Award in 1992, and of the Hubert Smith/Alfred Birdsey Sandys Rotary Award and, in 1994, the Bermuda College Special Award.
She has since taught art at the Montessori Academy and worked as speech and drama teacher at Northlands School.
"I am determined to go and study in England,'' she says. "I would like to be an ambassador for Bermuda and -- who knows? I may end up writing or directing a play on Broadway!'' HONOUR FOR GINEA -- Ginea Edwards, whose poetry is to be included in a new English anthology.
