Group stages parish dialogue

The Beyond Barriers group will hold a "community dialogue'' tomorrow night with the theme of this African proverb in mind.

Organisation spokesman Glenn Fubler said yesterday that the dialogue was slated to begin at 7.30 p.m. at Sandys Secondary School and will be held in conjunction with its Parent-Teacher Association.

Mr. Fubler said: "The idea of the concept is to address the issue of how we, as a community, can work along with schools to provide a network that is evidently needed.

"There is abundant evidence that a segment of young people feel they do not have any connection to society.

"We must demonstrate to these young people that we are working on an integrated society -- not just racially but through the generations and socially.'' Mr. Fubler said the group wanted to spread the dialogue through the entire Island and get everyone to come together and create some solutions that were practical.

He said while the dialogue was formatted to get everyone who attended involved and contributing, there would be a few people on hand to help give the process a jump start.

They included Youth Net representative Cornell Fubler, Archdeacon Arnold Hollis of St. James Church, chartered surveyor and Somerset resident Ted Gauntlett and social worker Veronica Ross.

A science teacher at Bermuda College, Mr. Fubler calls Beyond Barriers a "facilitator organisation''.

He said: "It facilitates the process whereby the wider community comes together. Our main objective is to get beyond the barriers of race, class and gender -- with the recognition that the community operates as an integrated whole, you can address anything.''
