Generous donations put BUEI on crest of a wave
attraction is on schedule to open in the spring of 1997.
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute's spokeswoman Ms Wendy Tucker said only $300,000 more was needed in order to reach the campaign's goal of $10 million after which the institute would strive to become self-sufficient.
Ms Tucker said the organisation hoped to continuously upgrade its displays and would work closely with the Biological Station and the Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo.
Institute trustee Mr. Jack Lightbourn said donations from individuals and the international committee had been extremely generous.
He said the institute wanted to become self supporting but it might "need to make further appeals for large projects''.
The institute will feature no live animals, only simulations and models including the tour's highlight of a simulated dive to 12,000 feet below the ocean's surface. Modern technology will abound with plenty of hands-on displays that will illustrate topics from wave motion and how Bermuda was formed to deep sea creatures' characteristics.
The BUEI's exhibits have been designed by New York firm DMCD Inc. and are due to be sent away for fabrication within the next two weeks. On-site construction work is continuing at a steady pace.
