Garden Club scholarship deadline looms

If you hope to turn a green thumb into a career prospect, the deadline for the Bermuda Garden Club scholarship is on Monday.

Although the scholarship might naturally make you think it is only dedicated to future gardeners, it is actually more broad in scope.

Last year, the Garden Club gave out $30,000 in scholarships to six students studying a range of “green” subjects including golf course management, environmental science, floristry and conservation science.

“Funds are available for people seeking financial assistance to pursue horticulture, landscaping, environmental studies or floriculture or related subjects that will subsequently benefit Bermuda,” said Joy Nash, who handles publicity for the Garden Club. “We feel that more people might be able to benefit for the scholarship. Usually around five or six scholarships are given out each year, but it varies.”

Many of their former recipients are now well known in the community and including Jeremy Madeiros, Government Conservation Officer, environmental activist Stuart Hayward, organic farmer Tom Wadson, Vanese Flood Gordon, Waste Education and Enforcement Officer for the Ministry of Public Works, and Fiona Doe, tree surgeon, among many others.

“At the 2010 scholarship awards, our then President Sally Godet said to the recipients, ‘you are following in some very interesting footsteps’,” said Mrs Nash. “I think those words are very accurate.”
