Witness appeal renewed in road death

Police are continuing their appeal for witnesses to a road traffic accident that claimed the life of a 77-year-old Warwick man.

A motorcycle hit Gladwin Johnston on February 28 at 12.30 p.m. as he attempted to cross the road at the junction of South Road and Upland Lane, in Warwick. Police are interested in speaking to anyone who was in the area at the time and particularly, anyone who may have seen a white car and a white van that stopped to help Mr. Johnston.

Investigators are said to be carefully piecing together the scene of the accident to determine the exact chain of events.

Mr. Johnston was walking home after stopping by a nearby gas station to buy his wife, Marion Johnston, 78, one of her favourite chocolate bars, when the accident occurred.

The cycle was travelling west on South Road and was driven by a 36-year-old expatriate worker. It is understood Johnson remained conscious after the impact and even tried standing up, before doctors told him he had suffered a serious broken hip.

He died in hospital 21 days later from cardiac arrest, as he was about to undergo a routine surgical procedure for his injured hip. Police are encouraging the occupants of the white vehicles, or any witnesses to the incident, to contact P.c. Mark Monk at the Somerset Police Station at 234-1010.
