Witness told: You're making up stories

Accused: Robert Butterfield, 36

A Policeman on trial for using threatening words has attacked the credibility of a Crown witness in Magistrates’ Court.

Defendant Robert Butterfield, of Old Military Road, St. George’s, said to witness Angela Williams, a Family Court clerk: “You’re making up stories. Did you concoct the story to get me falsely convicted in the court of law?”

Ms Williams replied: “I have no reason to lie. I don’t gain anything out of it.”

Butterfield is charged with uttering threatening words to Ms Williams on January 10 this year.

During questioning by Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney, Ms Williams said that on the day in question Butterfield and the mother of his child had been standing outside the court waiting to come in.

After letting them into the foyer of the courthouse, Ms Williams said she heard Butterfield begin to harass his ex-girlfriend by saying little comments about their daughter.

When two social workers arrived for court, Butterfield continued his taunting and harassment until Ms Williams went into the court room to speak with Acting Magistrate Edward Bailey.

When she exited with the courtroom, she said Butterfield shouted: “All of this is a game for you. I’m going to get you and f*** you up.”

Ms Williams told court she went to see Mr. Bailey three times about Butterfield’s behaviour.

Though Mr. Bailey called Butterfield into the court room to reprimand him and tell him to behave, Butterfield failed to calm down.

After more Police Officers were sent to Family Court, Ms Williams claims Butterfield stood up, punched his chest and cried while saying: “You people are doing this and doing that, keeping me away from my baby.”

Butterfield was then escorted out of the courthouse by another Police officer, who was trying to calm him.

During a cross-examination yesterday, Butterfield, who is representing himself, continued to allege that Ms Williams was giving false statements against him, but this time with the help of a Police officer.

He said: “I put it to you that the officer helped you to concoct your statement to prejudice me and that is why you can’t get your story straight against me?”

Ms Williams denied these allegations and said that two days after the January 10 incident she was still “frightened”, but was given guidance by her family to proceed with the charge.

The court heard Ms Williams say she was concerned that Butterfield would cause her actual bodily harm after he threatened her by saying: “This is all your fault. This is because of you. I am going to get you”.

Butterfield, however, maintains the statement was intended to mean he would get her “fired” or “sue” her.

Butterfield is currently suspended from the Bermuda Police Service and, due to other related cases, the paper has decided to withhold the name of the mother of his child.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo adjourned the case.
