Students celebrate important women in their lives

Several children were able to share their heartfelt essays yesterday morning with the women who inspired them.

The annual Mother’s Day Assembly took place at Paget Primary and aimed to celebrate not only the writing talents of students, but also the important women in their lives.

As in previous years, the students wrote essays about their mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts, but only one story from each class was selected as the winner.

Principal Terry Cox said: “All of the children were successful in meeting the objective of writing persuasive essays about their mothers. We chose those stories that were the most convincing.”

More specifically, the winning essays were the most touching, explained Lead Organiser, Rochelle Bean.

Mrs Bean said: “It was sort of like you felt the heart beat of the child — you can just feel it in the story”.

During the assembly, Mrs. Bean told the students: “You have to remember that all those stories were special and what made them special was your mothers”.

The winning students had part of their essays read aloud to their “mothers” and tears of joy and laughter circulated around the room. Student Rohini Gones described her mother as a precious jewel: “My mother is a diamond and a crystal. She is the best, she is even a pearl.”

Her mother, Monica, from Bangladesh, explained that while she does not speak English well, she is proud of her daughter for excelling with her essay. She described the experience as “a great honour”.

The other winners were: Jaela Bean-Lindo, Jesaiah Talbot, Nyumi Woodley-Tear, Micah Anderson, Nafiya Raynor, Ines Furtado, Tamara Jones, Lennae Edwards, Esran Ohilips, Daniella Pacheco and Liantae Stoneham. In the near future, the school is planning to have a day to celebrate fathers.
