94-year-old woman robbed

Police are hunting two people who stole a 94-year-old woman’s handbag - after asking for her help. The woman, who is now too frightened to be named, was sitting on a bench enjoying a cup of tea on Tuesday afternoon when her bag was snatched.

As well as cash, the bag contained a pair of prescription glasses - which the pensioner needs as she suffers from a degenerative eye disease.

The victim’s daughter told The Royal Gazette: “My mother is very frightened at the moment. She could not sleep that night because she kept dreaming about the incident. It’s very unnerving especially as they asked her for help and she was willing to assist them.

“It is unbelievable that this happened in Bermuda. Things have really changed here. We just really hope that someone will find the bag and return it because she desperately needs her spectacles back.”

The woman was sitting near the edge of her property, in Harbour Road, Warwick, when two people rode up to the wall of her home on their motorbike and asked for help.

The granny obliged and stood up to assist them. As she did, one of the two people grabbed her brown leather hand bag and sped off towards Longford Road. Her daughter said the bag contained only a small amount of money, but more importantly the glasses.

She said her mother has Macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the US, and needs the glasses to see.

The daughter said Police arrived on the scene very quickly and have been helpful.

The suspects are described as possibly two men or a man and a woman. The victim is not sure because they were wearing dark coloured helmets with visors that covered their faces, but the pillion passenger had long hair.

They wore dark clothing and rode a silver and red motorcycle.

If anyone locates the bag, or the glasses which were in a maroon case, the family is appealing for them to return to a Police Station.

Anyone with information should contact the Somerset Police Station on 293-2222.
