Garbage pick-up disrupted as workers down tools

Garbage trucks fill the lot at the Marsh Folly site as dissatisfied workers take industrial action yesterday morning.

Garbage piled up outside thousands of homes yesterday after industrial action suspended collections.

Services in the West End were disrupted after crews at the Marsh Folly site walked out.

Last night it was not known what their grievances were, but it is understood Government met with Union representatives in an attempt to diffuse further action.

Collections will run as normal in the East End today, with services in the West End of the Island resumed on Monday.

A Government spokesman said: “The Ministry of Works & Engineering would like to advise the public that there has been a disruption in garbage collection due to industrial action.

“The Ministry has met with Union representatives and expects that normal garbage collections will resume tomorrow (Friday) in the East End.

“The Ministry apologises to residents in the West End for the disruption in services today and invites them to take their garbage back in, or to use the public drop-off at the Tyne’s Bay Waste Treatment Facility.

“The Ministry apologises for any inconvenience to the public and thanks the public for their cooperation.”

The Bermuda Industrial Union was unavailable for comment last night.
