Accused Cooper twins murderers appear in court

Two men denied the grisly killing of the Cooper twins in Supreme Court yesterday.

In a brief appearance at the monthly Arraignments session, Dennis Alma Robinson 30, and Kenneth Jermain Burgess, 33, both pleaded not guilty to the double murder of 22-year-olds Jahmal and Jahmil Cooper

After both had responded to the two charges of murder, Assistant Justice Carlisle Greaves remanded the men to custody. They are to return to court for mention on August 1. Robinson, of Palm Valley, Southampton, and Burgess, of Hamilton Parish, were first charged in Magistrates? Court with the double homicide in April.

The pair had initially been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent to do grievous bodily harm on March 13, 2005.

The GBH charges were dropped, however, after Police recovered the brothers? decaying bodies from a Hamilton Parish cliff on April 14 and murder charges were subsequently laid.

In other matters, accused fraudster Terrence Smith, a former Bermuda Housing Corporation property officer, had a new trial date set for February 13, 2006.

Mr. Smith faces 49 charges of attempting to defraud the Government quango of close to $1.4 million between September 20, 2000 and February 27, 2002 and was one of two people fired in the aftermath of the BHC corruption scandal. Smith was initially set to be tried on May 23, 2005, but trial was postponed at his lawyer?s request.

A trial date was also set yesterday for five men accused of importing $40 million worth of drugs to Bermuda.

Tristan Le-Van Codrington, 29, of Prince Albert Terrace, George Leonard Lambert, 52, of Scar Lane, Ricardo Michael Tucker, 30, of Prince Albert Terrace, Gladwyn Sherwin Simmons, 53, of White Hill Lane, and Anthony Stanley Martin, 41, of Jamaica will be tried on April 3, 2006. The five men have denied conspiring to import and importing cannabis between a date unknown and March 8, 2004.

Lambert, who is represented by Elizabeth Christopher, also denied five other charges, including multiple counts of possession of a controlled drug, intending to supply, and possessing drug equipment on March 13 and 27, 2004.

Four of the men were released on bail, to appear again for mention in August, by which time Tucker must secure a counsel. Martin was remanded to custody.

A trial date was also set for a Hamilton Parish man who denied two charges ? inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and causing grievous bodily harm.

Kamel Jamel Trott, 28, of Kitty Lane, pleaded not guilty to both counts and his trial was set for September 1.

A 23-year-old Canadian woman pleaded guilty to two charges of drug importation. Brennetta Nedd admitted that she imported cocaine on June 4, 2005 and that she intended to supply the drugs.

Nedd will be sentenced at 2.30 p.m. today in Supreme Court.

A trial was set for February 6, 2006 for Jahdal Nashon Denbrook 23, of Bourne Drive, St. George?s. Denbrook pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm on February 19 this year.

Mr. Justice Greaves also set a trial date for Priscilla Delores Williams 60, of Bulkhead Drive, Warwick. Williams denied importing and possessing cannabis with intent to supply in St. George?s on January 5.

She will be tried in Supreme Court on December 5 and is represented by Elizabeth Christopher.

A homeless man who admitted to killing a gas station employee will be sentenced in September by the Supreme Court.

Coleridge Narado Hayward, 22, appeared in the afternoon Arraignments session yesterday and pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder but guilty to the lesser charge of manslaugher, a plea which was accepted by the court.

Mr. Justice Carlisle Greaves ordered a Social Inquiry Report for Hayward, who will be remanded in custody until his September 1 sentencing date.

A trial date of November 2 was set for two men who allegedly conspired to murder five individuals, including three Police officers in November 2004.

Kenneth Sinclair Durrant, 53, and Javon Earnest Gardener, 27, both pleaded not guilty to the five murder-related charges. In addition Durrant from Ord Road in Warwick and Gardener from Crossfield Lane in Sandys pleaded not guilty to attempting to defeat and pervert the course of justice.

Durrant?s lawyer is Craig Attridge while Gardener is being represented by Victoria Pearman.

A trial date was also set for Kevin Wayne Smith of Union Street. Smith will face trial on January 23, 2006 for possession of a controlled substance with intent to supply in February, 2005.

Jennifer Medeiros, 22, and Oshane Eugene Darrell, 27, of Seawall Drive will be sentenced tomorrow after being found guilty of possession of cocaine with intent to supply and possession of drug equipment.

And, a 38-year-old American, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear in court tomorrow for trial on a single count of sexual assault. He is represented by lawyer Richard Horseman.
