Bascome: Housing problem caused by booming construction industry
Bermuda needs to think twice before bringing in any additional foreign construction workers as it is putting strain on an already problematic housing situation.
United Bermuda Party (UBP) Senator, Kenny Bascome said the construction industry, being ?overheated?, was having detrimental effects on the overall economic wellbeing of the country.
He was responding to PLP Senator Walter Roban?s comment that Bermuda had a lack of skilled labour and needed to hire foreign workers to meet the need of the construction industry.
PLP Senator Reginald Burrows said Government found itself stuck between a ?rock and hard place? because there was a lack of construction workers so guest workers had to be brought in ? which only made the housing shortage worse.
Sen. Bascome said employers were responsible for finding these guest construction workers accommodation, which put an added burden on housing.
He said six to eight guest workers were willing to live in a two-bedroom apartment, while most Bermudians are not allowed to do the same.
?It?s having a detrimental effect in so far as affordable accommodation is concerned and Bermudians being able to find adequate housing,? he said.
