Barbadian senator makes rubbish claim

An independent senator in Barbados has cited Bermuda as an example in her bid for future recycling plants in that country.

According to Sen. Frances Chandler, ?householders in Bermuda who do not separate their garbage, run the risk of being exposed on television, where photographs of the house and garbage are publicised?.

But a spokeswoman from the Ministry of Works and Engineering confirmed yesterday, ?there is no such official policy in Bermuda.?

And an amused Jim McKee from Bermuda Broadcasting Company said ZBM/ZFB had never done anything of the kind.

His sentiments were echoed by Bryan Darby of VSB.

Mr. Darby said, however, that a few years ago they did do a story on VSB on waste management workers who threatened not to collect garbage from households, especially in Warwick, because animals faeces had been put in the rubbish.

The Barbadian senator made her claims on Friday while speaking on a resolution to approve the borrowing of half a million dollars from First Caribbean International Bank to purchase vehicles and equipment for the Sanitation Services Authority (SSA).

She was quoted on the Nation News website.

Sen. Chandler argued that instead of spending money to bury waste in Barbados, it could be spent to assist entrepreneurs in setting up recycling businesses.
