Workman injured in 12 foot fall at Belmont construction site

A 45-year old Pembroke man who fell 12 feet from a ledge was hospitalised yesterday morning.

The man, a worker with D&J Construction, was working on the Belmont Golf Club construction site when he fell from the ledge just after 9 a.m. yesterday morning.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene, and the man was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Last night he was in stable condition on a general ward.

Yesterday Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. D&J Construction refused to comment on the accident, while Belmont developer Kevin Petty is currently off the Island and was unable to comment.

A spokesperson at the Government Health and Safety office said the office was currently investigating the incident.

Trio injured in car crash

Three people were taken to hospital when an Opel Astra and Skoda collided on Barkers Hill, Devonshire on Sunday night.

The driver of the Opel, a 23-year-old Paget man, and the driver and passenger of the white Skoda ? a 40-year-old Smith?s parish man and a 44-year-old Devonshire woman, were treated for non-life threatening injuries after the crash around 10 p.m.

And the 26-year old Warwick man who crashed his bike at Crow Lane early Friday is still in critical but stable condition at King Edward hospital.

The man might be flown off the island for further treatment after he suffered serious head injuries after losing control of his cycle near the junction with Corkscrew Hill, striking the sidewalk and a wall. He also broke his right arm.

Man fined for having cocaine

A 21-year-old was fined $1,800 in Magistrates? Court on Thursday for possession of cocaine, violently resisting arrest and assaulting Police officers.

Devario Whitter, of Curving Avenue, Pembroke was seen by Police on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street on October 30, 2004.

?As the officers approached the defendant looked in their direction and froze momentarily,? Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said.

Police saw Whitter attempt to conceal something in his pocket but when they tried to search him he ran into a parking lot. The chase continued in and out of the yards of houses to a vacant lot near the Swinging Doors nightclub.

Whitter ran into the club. Police followed and cornered him in a back room. An out of control Whitter pushed officers before he was handcuffed, Mr. Blackman said.

A brown paper twist containing 86 percent freebase-cocaine was found on Whitter. Whitter claimed ten guys beat him up. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 for having cocaine, $500 for assault and $300 for resisting arrest.

Whitter was supposed to appear in court on November 21, 2001 to face charges of stealing or receiving a stolen cycle but did not appear.

Thursday, however, he pleaded not guilty to having anything to do with a stolen Suzuki Address valued at $1,000 between the dates of July 18 and 21, 2001. He was bailed for $1,000 to appear for trial on Friday, May 20.

St. George?s man escapes prison sentence

A 22-year-old received a six-month suspended sentence when he was caught driving while impaired just two months after he had been disqualified for the same offence.

Gordon Brown of Queen Street, St. George?s, was caught driving a car on Kindley Field Road, on March 5, 2005.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said Police saw Brown speeding and having difficulty driving around a roundabout, before they pulled him over. His breathalyser reading was 179 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Brown was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months on January 19, when he pleaded guilty to impaired driving.

If an impaired driver is caught a second time within a two-year period they face a $2,000 fine or 18 months in prison or both, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told the court.

But duty counsel Leo Mills implored Mr. Warner not to send Brown to prison. ?I persuade you, in this season of compassion, not to confine him,? Mr. Mills said.

Brown?s six-month sentence was suspended for 24 months. He was also fined $2,000 and was disqualified from all vehicles for 18 months. He received an additional $500 for driving while disqualified.

Three other drivers were fined $1,000 and taken off the road for a year in Magistrates? Court on Thursday for impaired driving.

Earlington Simons, 57, of Rocky Lane, Hamilton Parish, crashed his van into a wall on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish on January 29. Simons? breathalyser reading was 283 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Kenneth Barnett, 64, of Peers Lane, Pembroke, nearly reversed his blue car into the Police car which pulled him over on Harbour Road, Paget, on February 12, the court heard. Barnett?s breathalyser reading was 148 milligrams.

And Simon Hodgson, 39, of Radnor Road, Hamilton Parish, had breath which smelled of intoxicants and his eyes were glazed when Police stopped him on North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish on March 4.

Hodgson failed to give Police a sample of breath for analysis but was still fined $1,000 and banned from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

Stiff fine for cannabis resin

A 21-year-old was fined $1,000 for being in possession of a controlled drug outside Casey?s Bay on October 20, 2004.

In Magistrates? Court on Thursday, Andre Castle, of North Church Lane, Pembroke admitted to having 0.96 grams of cannabis resin stashed in a doorway near the Queen Street establishment.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said an off-duty Police Officer saw Castle talking in a transaction with another man.

When the Officer approached, Castle moved his hands behind his body and said he was not holding anything.

The drugs were found in a plastic bag behind them.

The other man, 21-year-old Jejoune MacDonald Smith, of Canal Road, Pembroke, will be tried on May 25.
