A Canadian is in stable condition in intensive care after being involved in a serious road traffic collision in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The 21-year-old was riding his rented cycle at the South Roundabout in Paget when he crashed at about 4.45 a.m.

The rider suffered head injuries and was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Police are asking for witnesses to the incident or anyone with information to contact P.c. Ricky Ramnarine on 295 0011.

And a 47-year-old motorcyclist was still clinging to life last night after suffering serious head injuries when he struck a utility pole on Middle Road at the weekend.

The rider was travelling west on Middle Road, Southampton near the junction of Tribe Road No. Six when he lost control of his motorcycle, scraped along a wall and smashed into a utility pole shortly before 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Last night a spokeswoman from clinical programmes at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital said the man, who is from Hamilton parish, remained in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

Post Office to get security upgrade

Security is to be tightened up at the General Post Office after workers had to move mounds of human excrement when they arrived for work on Tuesday morning.

The Post Office is left open to allow post box holder access but the Church Street HQ has become a haven for tramps.

Finance Minister Paula Cox said the Post Office was in the final stages of securing an agreement with a firm to provide a new access system.

She said: ?Once the access system is in place, our post box holders will have to use a credit or bank card to enter the building.

?While we are sympathetic to the problems homeless people encounter, there are overnight shelters available to them.

?We have a responsibility to our customers and our staff and can advise the public management has already met with staff and their union representatives and we are hopeful of having the new system operational in one month.?
