Boaz Island ban to be lifted

Boaz Island could be open late next week for swimming and boating as soon as the latest bacteria test results are cleared by the Department of Health.

The bay was flooded with raw, untreated sewage several weeks ago when a pump in a sewage tank managed by WEDCO overflowed and raw sewage flooded the shoreline areas by the condominium complex, posing serious dangers to swimmers and boaters since it can carry disease.

Health Inspector Eric Martin told yesterday the latest test results were clear with a ?good result?.

?It looks much cleaner, the effluent which was the foamy water with an obnoxious smell is gone, it should be by late next week or early the week after when we give the area the green light,? he said. ?So far people have been reading the signs and are not swimming in the area.?

WEDCO, which has the management contract for the site, said the faulty pump was replaced.

Mr. Martin added that the area will now be under constant surveillance through the Health Department?s seawater sampling programme which tests water in different locations Island wide for its bacteria content.

Devonshire residents at Frog Lane were also outraged this month after streams of raw sewage from a Government pipe leaked into their back yards. The Ministry of Works and Engineering has cleaned up the mess, said Mr. Martin yesterday.
