Breaking News: Privy Council finds against John Deuss
British law lords have ruled in favour of Bermuda in a case brought against the Government by oil tycoon John Deuss over his arrest in October.
The decision was announced today following a hearing in the Bahamas on April 2.
“This morning, the Privy Council announced its decision in favour of the Government of Bermuda in the case of Johannes Deuss v The Attorney General and The Commissioner of Police for Bermuda,” a Government spokesperson stated.
Director of Public Prosecutions Rory Field is expected to comment on the decision later today.
Dutch multi-millionaire Mr. Deuss launched a civil appeal in connection with his arrest on the Island in October 2006.
The Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal had already rejected his claim that Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo was wrong to issue a provisional warrant for his arrest at the request of prosecutors in the Netherlands investigating a complicated tax swindle known as carousel fraud.
Mr. Deuss was seized by detectives before being voluntarily extradited to his homeland in 2006.
