Broadcaster Sharpe sued by car smash victim

A writ has been filed in the Supreme Court by a faculty member of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) against ZBM News presenter Mike Sharpe.

Dr. James Wood was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in May, 2004 when was allegedly in collision with Sharpe on Kindley Field Road.

Sharpe, 48, of Bridle Hill, Smith?s, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Dr. Wood and being over the legal drink drive limit.

Sharpe has pleaded not guilty to the charges and faces trial on June 6.

Dr. Wood, who is a behavioural scientist and studies cephalopods such as octopus and squid and also teaches classes at the St. George?s facility, spent more than two weeks in hospital following the crash.

Dr. Wood said yesterday that he spent an additional five months with a metal frame on his leg which included steel rods running through his skin.

?I?ve haven?t really fully recovered from that ? it aches all the time, especially in the mornings,? he said.

Dr. Wood said he was suing Sharpe for remuneration lost during that time, pain caused by the accident and legal costs.

Dr. Wood?s grant to continue his research in Bermuda now hangs in the balance as he was unable to write his grant proposal last year due to the accident.

?I just want to get my life back the way it was before,? he said.

Sharpe could not be reached for comment yesterday.
