Cricket star admits smuggling cannabis
Cup Match hero and St. George's cricket star Gregg Foggo faces up to five years in jail for importing more than $30,000 worth of cannabis into the Island in May.
Foggo, 34, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court yesterday as St. George's Cup Match team coach, George Cannonier sat watching.
Foggo was stripped of the St. George's' Cup Match captaincy this year with his court date pending ? although any anxiety on his part was not immediately evident while playing a starring role in the East End side's dramatic triumph at the Wellington Oval last week.
Roared on by the partisan home crowd, Foggo's inspired medium paced bowling accounted for four Somerset wickets ? including the win-clinching delivery which shattered tailender Kevin Hurdle's stumps to prompt wild celebration across the packed ground.
Yet Foggo's radiant smile on that occasion was replaced by a solemn stare in Magistrates' Court yesterday as the 34 year old went from hero to zero in little under a week.
Scheduled to appear in court for mention only, he ultimately entered a guilty plea to the charge ? this after originally pleading not guilty to importing and possessing cannabis with intent to supply on his first court appearance on July 7.
Despite its size, the courtroom was packed with supporters as the Crown counsel Wayne Caines explained how Foggo was arrested on the night of May 26 at Bermuda International Airport having returned from Philadelphia on US Airways Flight 386, shortly after 10 p.m.
He reportedly cleared Immigration and collected his luggage from the baggage hall, but was then referred for a secondary customs' inspection.
Mr. Caines told the court that it was while standing in line that the Police sniffer dog was suddenly alerted to him.
Pulled aside to be interviewed, Foggo appeared nervous and agitated according to Mr. Caines, before walking away saying he was going to the washroom.
However, suspecting he was a drugs courier, Police and Customs officers accompanied Foggo to the toilet before taking hime to a private search room.
Declining a personal search, Foggo told officers he had smoked a "spliff" during his trip and swore he had nothing on him.
He was then taken to the Airport Police Station where under further interrogation he eventually pointed to his groin and told officers he "had something."
It was at this point that Foggo admitted he had "some weed" and reached into his trousers to pull out a package which he then dropped on the floor.
Foggo told officers that this was "all he had" ? yet when he was taken to another room, he was seen removing a second package from his trousers which he tried to hide.
The two packages together contained just over 640 grams of cannabis with an approximate street value of $32,150.
The disgraced cricket star will return to court on August 9 for sentencing and was released on $30,000 bail with one life surety.
Mr. Caines offered no evidence on the charge of possession with intent to supply.
Foggo was represented by Victoria Pearman.
