Events to mark centennial
One of Britain's most distinguished judges, Lord Slynn of Hadley, will be a keynote speaker at a dinner next week celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Supreme Court.
The dinner, where Queen's Counsel Gilbert Gray will also speak, is one of the highlights of a week of events marking the July 1 anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court in 1905.
The events begin tomorrow at 10.45 a.m. when Chief Justice Richard Ground will lead a procession of judges and barristers from the House of Assembly to the Anglican Cathedral on Church Street for a Special Assize Service.
There will be a special sitting of the Supreme Court on July 1 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the first sitting of the Supreme Court exactly a 100 years ago. Members of the public can attend but space is limited.
On July 2 there will be a black tie affair at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel at 7 p.m. Tickets are being sold by the Centenary Committee for $150 and may be purchased by calling 292-1350, ext. 264. The keynote speakers at the event will be Mr. Gray, a prominent criminal defence lawyer, and Lord Slynn of Hadley, a distinguished member of the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords and the Privy Council.
