Fury over partially demolished wall

A Spanish Point neighbourhood is in uproar after workers began demolishing a wall ? and then left the job unfinished.

Valley View Lane residents fear the leaning wall is a danger and are furious at the debris left behind.

Now they have taken their protest to Government, demanding the work be completed.

The wall is on both Tulo Lane and Valley View Lane. The portion of it remaining leans into Valley View Lane.

One resident told : ?I don?t think they would leave it like that if it was Fairylands.?

She voiced dismay the job had not been finished and suggested yellow tape or even a barricade be erected to alert people to work in progress.

Another resident was upset at the debris left behind.

She said her mother had just had her walkway painted and now it was covered in the residue of the wall.

?She [my mother just got this painted and now she?s going to have to have someone come and do it over.?

The woman said she had called Works & Engineering but was unable to contact the necessary people. ?I?m going to write a letter next.?

She said that there was a debate about which road the wall belonged to.

She believed if the wall was in another area it would have been knocked down and fixed by now.

Another resident feared the safety issue at hand. ?Anyone that lost their steering could drop right down into Tulo Valley Lane?, he said.

He was also angry that workers had not returned to finish the job nor had they cleaned up their mess.

Workers came to start the demolition last Tuesday and have not returned to complete the job.

Government Spokesperson Nea Talbot said the Ministry of Works and Engineering acknowledged that its work crews had been working on wall repairs on Valley View Lane.

?Having been made aware of residents? concerns for safety, the Ministry will ensure that there is a temporary barrier in place in the area until the work can resume,? a press release stated.

The release explained the wall had been a safety issue for some time and the private landowner had been told by the Ministry to fix the problem.

The Ministry would like to remind the public to report any walls or rock cuts that pose danger.
