Heed those sirens, Police urge drivers
Police have renewed an appeal for drivers to pull over and make way when emergency vehicles are approaching with sirens blazing. team saw the problem first hand on Friday morning as a Traffic Collision Investigation Unit raced to an accident on Middle Road, Southampton.
Travelling at speeds of up to 120 kph the car had its progress interrupted several times by oncoming traffic which failed to make way.
While traffic in the same lane mostly did its best to pull over ? with some dishonourable exceptions ? several east-bound vehicles kept coming despite the noise of the blaring siren.
Several drivers pulled out of junctions on to the main road while the worst offender was a woman in Warwick who wove past the speeding Police car, without slowing, all the while chatting on her mobile phone.
Unit chief Sgt. Phil Lewis said: "People don't even flinch or pull over.
"As soon as you hear a siren immediately they pull over and stop, that's what the law says, but they should try to stop clear of junction or corner."
People caught disobeying this law face a magistrate's court fine.
