KEMH laundry staff stage sit-in protest

A sit-in at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital yesterday was resolved pending a sit-down between hospital management and the Bermuda Industrial Union next week.

Around 15 to 20 staff stopped work at the KEMH laundry at the start of the working day yesterday in response to a potential redundancy of four workers.

Last night Bermuda Industrial Union president Derrick Burgess confirmed representatives of the BIU were present at the protest yesterday.

?I understand they are trying to make some people redundant while they still have part-time people working there,? Mr. Burgess said. ?That certainly is not acceptable.?

He said one worker threatened with redundancy had worked at the hospital for 30 years.

Mr. Burgess said he did not know all of the details, but he knew the sit-in had been resolved and no redundancies had been made yet.

The action did not spread to other parts of the hospital.

Joan Dillas-Wright, CEO of the Bermuda Hospitals Board said: ?The situation in the laundry has been resolved pending a meeting next week.?

?We have assured our employees that any information that concerns them will be communicated directly to them first and foremost.?
