Portuguese youth plan protest
Young Portuguese Bermudians will meet tonight to protest against racial violence in the wake of the attack on Rui Medeiros. The meeting will be held at Vasco da Gama Club from 7.30 p.m.
Spokesman Robert Pires said feeling in the Portuguese Bermudian community was running very high as a result of the brutal beating, which happened last Wednesday after a World Cup football match.
He added: ?As a result, a number of young Portuguese Bermudians have called for a protest against racial violence of any sort, not just against the Portuguese.
?This meeting is open to all Bermudians, regardless of ethnicity. A march on Parliament is being considered.?
Mr. Pires also revealed that the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Robert Horton was attempting to arrange a meeting between the leaders of the Portuguese community, the Acting Minister of Home Affairs Walter Lister and Police Commissioner George Jackson.
He added: ?The Portuguese Community hopes that this meeting will provide it with some clarity with respect to Police efforts to apprehend these hooligans.?
Mr. Pires said he did not want the meeting to compete with the anti-racism efforts of Jonathan Starling, who is arranging a peaceful demonstration on the steps of Hamilton City Hall on Friday lunchtime.
Meanwhile, the victim of the attack yesterday said he had met with Police and given them a report of the incident outside Docksiders last week.
He said he gave Police the names of two men he believed helped carry out the attack ? and claimed he saw one of his attackers in the Shelly Bay area yesterday. ?He just looked at me,? said Mr. Medeiros, who said he just walked past.
He said that Police told him that witnesses to the attack were needed for any prosecution to proceed. Nobody has come forward at this stage, he added, although no appeal for witnesses appear to have been made by Police through the usual media channels. Mr. Medeiros, who along with his family has been critical of the Police response to the incident, said he was considering getting a lawyer unless there were some developments in the case. Anyone with information on the attack should call Police on 295-0011.
Meanwhile, news of the attack has spread to the Azores. A journalist from the newspaper Jornal dos Acores contacted yesterday.
