Premier 'shocked and appalled by reprehensible crimes'
Government quickly condemned the stabbing of two women on board the Bermudian on Friday night.
Speaking from the Caribbean yesterday, Premier Alex Scott, above, said he was shocked and appalled at the violence of “these ruthless thugs”.
“I was shocked and appalled when informed of the senseless violence that occurred on the MV Bermudian Friday evening,” the Premier said.
“I immediately instructed the Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety, to liaise with the Commissioner of Police to ensure that everything possible is done to apprehend those responsible for these reprehensible crimes. Violence against one Bermudian is a violent act against us all!”
The Premier said Government would continue to strengthen laws to protect the community since it was committed to a society of law and good order.
“I now call upon all Bermudians to commit to doing their part, by supporting the efforts of the Government and by assisting the Police in their current enquiries and in any other way that will contribute to arresting all random acts of violence in our Island home,” he said. “By whatever means necessary, this Government must and will take back our community from the hands of ruthless thugs.”
On Saturday, Deputy Premier Ewart Brown made a quick-fire response about the attacks.
“In this climate of senseless and deplorable violence, our first concern is the protection of our crews and passengers on our vessels,” Dr. Brown said.
“I want to ensure the public that urgent steps to counter this kind of activity have been taken.”
He said there would be additional security measures in place for various social events, in particular a concert at the Somerset Cricket Club.
“Precautions will include extra Police patrols and video surveillance,” he said. “We must end this madness. The criminals must not win.”
Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety, Randy Horton, could not be reached for comment last night.
